Precautionary Boil Water Advisory – Dixon Lane in East Beach on St Simons Island – Tuesday, December 11, 2018

DRINKING WATER WARNING

BOIL YOUR WATER FOR THREE MINUTES BEFORE USING

The St Simons Island water system lost pressure to Dixon Lane in East Beach on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 due to a private contractor hitting a 2″ PVC main. Once service has been restored, BGJWSC lab personnel will collect water samples for testing. This testing, which will take between 18 and 24 hours, should be completed on Wednesday, December 12, at which time an all-clear message will be posted.

This loss of pressure in the distribution system may cause back-pressure, back-siphonage, or a net movement of water from outside the pipe to the inside through cracks, breaks, or joints in the distribution system that are common in all water systems. Such a system failure carries with it a potential that bacterial contamination or other disease-causing organisms could enter the water distribution system. These conditions may pose an imminent and substantial health endangerment to persons served by the water system.

This precautionary boil water advisory is being published as a warning to those that live in, work in, or travel through the affected area. During the period of the loss of pressure, water will also not be available for fire suppression use. The map below indicates the limit to which this precautionary boil water advisory applies:

What should I do?

  • DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST. Bring all water to a rolling boil for at least (3) three minutes, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. ALL STORED WATER, DRINK OR ICE MADE RECENTLY FROM THIS SUPPLY SHALL BE DISCARDED.
  • Bathing, showering and toilet flushing may be performed using water from the tap without boiling it first.
  • Inadequately treated water may contain disease-causing organisms. These organisms include bacteria, viruses, and parasites which can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants, young children, some of the elderly and people with severely compromised immune systems.
  • The symptoms above are not caused only by organisms in drinking water. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical advice. People at increased risk should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers.

What is being done?

As soon as pressure can be restored to the distribution system, our water lab personnel will take water samples that will be fully evaluated over the next twenty-four to forty-eight hour period following the repair of the main. Once we have determined that there is no longer a threat of harmful bacteria in the water, we will inform you that you are no longer required to boil your water by posting an update here on our website: http://www.bgjwsc.org.

Precautionary Boil Water Advisory – Canal Road Shopping Center in Brunswick – Monday, December 10, 2018

DRINKING WATER WARNING

BOIL YOUR WATER FOR THREE MINUTES BEFORE USING

The Brunswick water system lost pressure to the Canal Road Shopping Center between Spur 25 and Hindman Lane on Monday, December 10, 2018 due to the emergency isolation of the 16″ PVC main needed to install a water service connection in the Canal Road Shopping Center area. Once service has been restored, BGJWSC lab personnel will collect water samples for testing. This testing, which will take between 18 and 24 hours, should be completed on Tuesday, December 11, at which time an all-clear message will be posted.

As efforts were made to contain the outage and minimize the impacts of the repair, the expectation is that only those service connections directly connected to the water system between Spur 25 and Hindman Lane are subject to this boil water advisory, including those in Canal Road Shopping Center as well as those in the vicinity of the map below. However, as adjoining and surrounding service connections may have also been affected depending on the method of connection to the main, proceed with caution if you observed any drop in pressure today.

Tradewinds Industrial Park Closer to GRAD Certification

The Brunswick & Glynn Development Authority and the Brunswick-Glynn County Joint Water & Sewer Commission (JWSC) have worked together to cross a significant milestone in bringing the Tradewinds Industrial Park to certified industrial status. In recent years, the Glynn County community has worked diligently to market industrial and commercial sites for economic growth. A significant opportunity for over 600 acres of industrial growth is the Tradewinds Industrial Park at Exit 42 on I-95. One key to better marketability is Georgia Ready for Accelerated Development (GRAD) certification.

The GRAD Sites Program is a proactive effort by Georgia’s economic development community to develop a pool of available sites ready for industrial development. The GRAD designation for an industrial site means that the site has been pre-reviewed and pre-qualified for the following criteria: Phase I environmental assessment, preliminary geotechnical investigation, cultural and endangered species investigation, zoning designation, utility service (water & sewer), wetlands and stream delineation.

The Brunswick & Glynn County Development Authority has persistently made efforts to achieve GRAD certification for the Tradewinds Industrial Park. Until recently, this site met all the requirements except sanitary sewer service capacity. “This is a significant development in our efforts to achieve GRAD Certification, and we appreciate the hard work of the JWSC. Having sites that are engineered and ready for development is critical to our success in attracting and growing our industry. We are working diligently to submit our application and look forward to continued success.” said Paulo Albuquerque, Chairman of the Authority.

The JWSC has been working on the North Mainland Sewer Improvements Project which was initiated to increase sewer capacity for economic development in the North Mainland Area. These efforts include increased capacity for the Tradewinds Industrial Park. This project was made possible by funds provided from the 2016 SPLOST election. With these funds, Phase I of the North Mainland Sewer Improvement Project has been completed. With Phase I completion, sufficient sewer capacity has been made available to facilitate GRAD certification of the Tradewinds Industrial Park. This certification will provide much greater potential for industrial and commercial development at this site and will increase opportunities for job creation.
