  • Precautionary Boil Water Advisory – Cedar Walk Subdivision of Sea Palms on St. Simons Island – Saturday, July 1, 2017

    DRINKING WATER WARNING

BOIL YOUR WATER FOR THREE MINUTES BEFORE USING

The St. Simons Island water system has lost pressure in the area serving the Cedar Walk Subdivision of Sea Palms on St. Simons Island on Saturday, July 1, 2017 due to a cracked main under Windward Dr. BGJWSC crew members have already repaired the main and restored service to the homes.

This loss of pressure in the distribution system may cause back-pressure, back-siphonage, or a net movement of water from outside the pipe to the inside through cracks, breaks, or joints in the distribution system that are common in all water systems. Such a system failure carries with it a potential that bacterial contamination or other disease-causing organisms could enter the water distribution system. These conditions may pose an imminent and substantial health endangerment to persons served by the water system.

This precautionary boil water advisory is being published as a warning to those that live in, work in, or travel through the affected area. During the period of the loss of pressure, water will also not be available for fire suppression use. The map below indicates the limit to which this precautionary boil water advisory applies:

    What should I do?

    • DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST. Bring all water to a rolling boil for at least (3) three minutes, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. ALL STORED WATER, DRINK OR ICE MADE RECENTLY FROM THIS SUPPLY SHALL BE DISCARDED.
    • Bathing, showering and toilet flushing may be performed using water from the tap without boiling it first.
    • Inadequately treated water may contain disease-causing organisms. These organisms include bacteria, viruses, and parasites which can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants, young children, some of the elderly and people with severely compromised immune systems.
    • The symptoms above are not caused only by organisms in drinking water. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical advice. People at increased risk should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers.

    What is being done?

As soon as pressure can be restored to the distribution system, our water lab personnel will take water samples that will be fully evaluated over the next twenty-four to forty-eight hour period following the repair of the main. Once we have determined that there is no longer a threat of harmful bacteria in the water, we will inform you that you are no longer required to boil your water by posting an update here on our website: http://www.bgjwsc.org.

    DRINKING WATER WARNING

BOIL YOUR WATER FOR THREE MINUTES BEFORE USING

The Brunswick/Mainland water system has lost pressure in the area serving the 1300 and 1400 block of Union Street, between Mansfield Street and Gloucester Street, on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 due to water main repairs and relocation being performed as part of the Mansfield Street Project managed by the City of Brunswick. Service has been restored as of 11:39 AM and BGJWSC staff members will now begin the testing process to ensure that no adverse bacterial growth has occurred, a process that will take 22 to 24 hours to complete.

  • Public Emergency Notification System is Now Available

The BGJWSC has begun using a Public Emergency Notification System for immediate mass communications of emergency information.

Effective at 8:00 am on Thursday, June 22, 2017, all boil water advisory alerts, unexpected road closures and unplanned service outages will be communicated to subscribers using this emergency notification system. This system, produced by Everbridge, Inc., will allow the public to set up multiple means of communication, including text, land-line phone message, cell phone message and email. If we fail to reach you using one method, the system will automatically roll over to the next method until you confirm receipt of the message. A brief introduction of this system is available in the orientation video below:

Existing customers that have provided an email address will receive an email to confirm their preferences for the service once their data has been put into the system. However, please feel free to register now, if you wish, as this data migration may take some time.

Those of you that have previously received emergency notifications via email from our online subscription service will find that system will be phased out by the end of August, 2017 at which time all emergency notifications will be sent out via this Public Emergency Notification System. All non-emergency notifications will continue to be sent via the website email system, as outlined on the Subscribe to Updates page on our website.

I’m standing by to assist if you have any questions on how to make the transition or if you have questions about how to register for the new Public Emergency Notification System.

    Sincerely,

    Jay Sellers, Public Information Officer

  • Precautionary Boil Water Advisory – Exit 29 Service Area in Brunswick – Tuesday, May 23, 2017

    DRINKING WATER WARNING

BOIL YOUR WATER FOR THREE MINUTES BEFORE USING

The Brunswick water system has lost pressure in the Exit 29 service area on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 due to a hit-and-run driver breaking off a hydrant on Baumgardner Road. The affected area includes all BGJWSC customers south of Blythe Island and west of Jekyll Island. As many restaurants and schools are in this area, state guidelines require two twenty-four periods of water testing before this precautionary advisory can be lifted.
